What is it we seek? Happiness ultimately. We are all beautifully and wonderfully made in the image of God, and we are made for happiness with Him. But so often we search for happiness in temporary things that cannot satisfy us.
There is a void in us. The real question is: How will you fill that void? We can spend hundreds of hours on the internet reading self-help info, pouring over articles on how to make more money or find true love, or binge watching Netflix, but we are trying to fill our emptiness with things that won’t last. St. Augustine says,
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”
Only God can fill the void. If we do not seek God first, we will fool ourselves into thinking we can find happiness where it just does not last (money, material goods, earthly pleasures). But if we do seek God first, we can find the happiness He wants for us and we become fully alive. As St. Catherine of Siena said,
“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”
Now go set the world on fire!
