The old Onerock had separate categories of discussion on its forums. It was nice. There are many present-day sites like Fatt Mas (PHATMASS.COM) for example; that has this formidable forum format.
How does one start a separate category under “General Discussion”? Do you take suggestions?

I agree, I tried to add some sub catagories but I disliked how they were added. I will try again to see what I can do. I would hate to say it but I myself think it might be best if we switch back to phpbb instead of this forum platform. Just an idea... What catagories did you have in mind?

1) Open Mic
2) Debate table
3) politics
4) pop culture
5) college/higher education/apprenticeships
6) catholic catholic (life)
7) prayer room
8) family
9) lameness
I would have to say thats pretty close to how phatmass has their site. Did you want all those to be main catagories? Or some sub?

Main categories, I think would be better and yes I was thinking of fat-mass. In order to succeed I firmly believe that you must emulate your competition. Still a carbon copy is not what I was thing of. For this site to take off it should offer something unique.
One of the things I’ve found lacking on this type of (catholic) forum is commentary from a real ordained catholic priests, for instance. However you’ve got to start somewhere and build from there.
Fat-mass has over 4,223 registered members, that’s huge
The catagories you listed sound really sweet. Phatmass is huge, but the thing is they seem to me to be les friendly and laid back. When I was there I felt like noone knew me, while at Onerock I felt like I belonged and it was nice and cozy and friendly. Just a thought.

I am hoping to come up with some catagories that are unique yet not the same as phatmass. I am friends with the person that runs phatmass so I wouldn't want to copy him. I like some of your ideas for the catagories but I still think we should be unique with our catagories. I just haven't had to much time (or the inspiration) to come up with them yet.

So, would that be a bad think to copy. It works this Phatmass phorum. Perhaps you could ask Dust what he thinks. He might be flattered, he might even agree with me.
Not to be redundant, as I said, for this site, “one(1)rock” to be successful it has to be unique too.
True true...Before I make all the catagories I want to make sure we are sticking with this platform. If we aren't then I would rather not start all of them then find out the forum is moving. I sent an email to the person in charge of onerock with the question. I am still waiting for a reply.
